White Day Interlude: Of Chocolates, Pigs and Bears
1 month ago, Valentines day
It was in the afternoon, and hot. Having arrived home, tired from meeting some friends in the city, I dropped my bag on the ground and headed into the kitchen.
I looked around as I went for a drink, hoping that my parents had found a package sent to me from a friend in Japan. She had said that she would be sending chocolate, so I had been eagerly awaiting for it to arrive. My other two friends had already received theirs, so I was a little disappointed.
I glanced over the tables and chairs, nothing. I plopped myself on the couch and pouted.
Letting myself fall slowly to the side, I stared in to the distance, and slowly let my eyes unfocus. But as I did so, I caught sight of it. A pink parcel, hidden half under some ads for groceries on the counter that I had passed over. I pulled myself up and half ran over. It was addressed to me, from Nakata Aya, it said. Relief and happiness slowly started welling up in me, and I went off to carefully open it.
The chocolates were so pretty.

Although these chocolates are what the Japanese call “obligation chocolates”, I couldn’t help to be a little happy – because, well, they did come from a girl that I cared about a lot for after all.
Today, White Day
So today is White Day, a Japanese Day in which Japanese guys and those who celebrate it, return a gift to the girls that gave them Chocolates on Valentine’s Day. Of course, I had to get my friend something. So I bought her a bear dressed up as a big, and sent it to her in the mail a few days ago. I sure hope it arrives on time, and that the journey isn’t too rough for the bear… I did have to squash it into a small package after all!
She likes pigs, so I hope she likes it.

Happy White Day!
